Year of projects - 12.08.12

Well, it is Sunday again, so time for the week's update on my YOP work.  This week has been full of all sorts of activities, but maybe not so much knitting.  I am keeping on with my ten stitch twist, although this week admittedly, maybe not a complete rotation.

I am nearing the end of the first ball of King Cole Riot, so ordered a couple more..... incidentally, this website I've used a few times, has an offer on Riot at the moment....very handy, and quick delivery too.

Other knitting this week, has been a new project from my list, which has taught me a brand new skill.....I can now (kind of) cope with DPNs....

This is the main body for the Big Snowy Owl...my version will be a Not Quite So Big Snowy Owl as I'm using aran weight not the super bulky called for.  I am pleased as punch with my new found skill....I would never have guessed that DPNs were used like that......thank goodness for google.....who knew you had to.....stand on your head before you could do it......actually, I did think that all four needles held the stitches and you went round from needle to needle....I've got to say to all you sock knitters, I'm not sure how you do it, I was definitely all fingers and thumbs!  Do you ever find that one of the needles you are not holding, ever falls out?  That would be reason for a small meltdown in my mind!

Well, that's about it for this week....my hubby and kids are drumming their fingers waiting for me to finish so we can get out walking, so I must tarry no longer.

Just one quick pic of the fruit I put into another summer pud yesterday........doesn't that just scream summer?!

Looking forward to sitting down later and reading about all your  progress too.....thanks for being such a great group to be part of!  Hope you all have a great crafting week.x

  2. 10 Stitch twist is still looking great. Thanks for the link, as I get most of my yarn online I'm always looking for bargains and good places. I do use Deramores, I love their selection and they to have a quick delivery and thats to me in Ireland. Snowy owl looks great and way to go you on using the DPNS, once mastered they are wonderful but then I've always liked dpn's and prefer to use them for in the round items than circular ones, I know I'm a bit odd lol. That fruit looks so amazing and is just so Summer, enjoy your walk and your summer pudding.

  3. Oh the ten stitch twist is looking lovely so far! I still have yet to master using dpn's without throwing them across the room and going back to something I know how to do :-P

  4. Your ten stitch is stunning, I had thought about doing a square one and seeing yours I might just have to cast one one as soon as I am finished my zig and zag.

DPNS are extremely annoying, I have to admit now that I have mastered the magic loop I prefer that method

  5. I learned how to use DPNs just under a year ago when I was bored on a long car journey and it completely opened up a whole new world of knitting for me Faith, I have loved knitting socks since then. I try to use the bamboo DPN's as they tend not to slip out and make you lose all your stitches :o)
I have always admired that snowy Owl on the Purl Bee blog and look forward to seeing how your little one comes out. I have frogged my patterned waist coat over and over again and might just give up and keep it plain an simple for easy knitting after a hard day at work! Or a simple pattern or cable might just appear :o) xox Happy sunshiny week ahead for you all x Penelope

  6. Your 10 stitch is great and I love the colorway of it.

As for DPN....................YUCK! I taught myself magic loop and hardly ever use DPN now. I was always dropping needles and loosing my place.

  7. Yes, occasionally the DPNs fall out. I prefer magic loop.

Your blanket looks really pretty :)

  9. Your 10 st Twist looks like magic happening when one disappears to another place. Hooray you've mastered DPNs. I find that skill to be invaluable. Gosh those berries looks yummy; are you making jam or a crumble or a pie?

  11. What a gorgeous blanket! I've been wanting to do a pattern like that one for some time. . . Blankets are so daunting though. :p

The fruit is making my mouth water!

  12. I love my dpns, and often use them in pref to circs now, especially at the start of a hat. I've never had one fall out, but I have accidentally pulled out a loaded needle instead of the empty one before. That required a stiff drink and much cussing.

You asked on my post last week about my housework routine - I just listed every task that needed doing every week/day and allocated them to days. Then I knuckle down and do it every day. I think it might be easier for me with 1 child, 1 cat and a husband who often works from home.

  13. I understand the "sorta", "kinda", "stand on your head while whistling" for mastering dpn's..I've love using them for decreases on hats etc..but I am struggling with socks...

I do like it tho..maybe cuz it's something new..

  14. Congratulations on the DPN use! The Goatmother can't do it and is afraid to try. The Goatfather can do it. However, we would like to see you stand on your head and knit. :) It all looks fabulous! What is it that the spiral is going to be?

  15. Your ten stitch is amazing. As for sock knitting, I use the magic loop method. I'm getting better at working with DPNs, but do not enjoy it at all!

  16. Ooh, well done with the DPNs :D Have you tried magic loop? I find it easier for small knitted in the round projects.

I'm feeling a bit of a YOP failure at the moment but with the recent RA flare up not much knitting has been happening here.

    Summer pudding. Yum!

  17. Congrats on mastering DPNs, they're not as scary as you think. Very rarely i fine the needle falls out if I'm knitting very loosely, but it's not common, and you just put it straight back in. And the blanket looks great.

  18. I have to admit, although I've knitted in the round a little, DPNs scare me - like you, I worry what would happen if one fell out! Well done for mastering them, and that snowy owl is so sweet :)

Masons is local-ish to me, although I didn't know they did mail order. Very handy, as I can't get there in work hours. The site looks easier to use than the shop, which is always stacked floor to ceiling!

  20. Yay to conquering your fear of DPNs. They make me want to scream...

  21. Love that project - what's the name of the pattern? Is it a blanket or a shawl? Good going on the DPN's - I'm not quite there yet but will be by the end of my first YOP year.

  22. Ooo, thanks for the link to the wool supplier- always good to know where a bargain can be had!
Not being a knitter, DPN sounds like some sort of ghastly surgical procedure, so well done for mastering it!
    Have a great week.
    Xx

  23. I too struggled with DPNs (and still do) but after a few times, your hands will just "know". :) 10 stitch is looking good!

  24. Gorgeouser and gorgeouser on that ten-stitch twist.

Congrats on conquering DPNs! I do know how to use them but avoid it whenever possible. :) And I share the nightmare of having one fall out - ugh!

We're enjoying summer puds too - this morning it was a puffy pancake with plum, blueberries, and cherries. Yum!

I'd love to hear what you think, and I won't be asking you to jump through hoops (or fill in a captcha) to do it.............
